Abstract

This article examines the practical implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in history education
at the basic level. The research aims to develop strategies for the full inclusion of students with diverse educational needs and the
creation of an inclusive environment. Traditional teaching models oriented toward the "average" student fail to meet the needs of
learners with different abilities, learning styles, and cognitive skills. This issue is particularly acute in history education, where
verbal, text-based methods predominate, often creating barriers for students with dyslexia, attention deficit disorders, sensory
limitations, or other learning difficulties. The study was conducted using a Design-based research methodology during the 2024
2025 academic year. UDL-based lesson plans were developed and implemented, incorporating representation diversity (text, video,
infographics, audio, interactive maps), action and expression diversity (essays, presentations, podcasts, role-playing, video projects),
and engagement differentiation (choice of topics, collaboration formats, difficulty levels). The diagnostic phase revealed that
traditional history teaching methods do not accommodate students' diverse needs and often lead to feelings of marginalization
among students with special educational needs. Following the interventions, significant positive changes were observed: student
engagement increased from 67% to 89%, and academic achievement improved for both students with special needs and those with
typical development, particularly in critical thinking, historical source analysis, and narrative construction skills. The study's
findings are applicable for integrating UDL principles into textbooks, implementing inclusive teaching methods in teacher training
programs, diversifying assessment systems, and fostering inclusive school culture. Universal Design for Learning represents a
systemic pedagogical approach that requires collaborative efforts from teachers, administration, and the entire educational system
to achieve sustainable change.
