Abstract

One primary difficulty in algebraic solutions to textual problems is deciding the number of unknown quantities
represented by variables. Methodologically, it is justified to assign variables to what needs to be found or to aspects describing
the process. We focus on textual problems that result in systems where the number of equations does not match the number of
variables. Such problems significantly enhance students' logical thinking, intuition, creativity, and overall mathematical
culture. Teachers often face substantial methodological challenges teaching these problem-solving methods. Students must
understand that it is not always necessary to find every variable in equations and inequalities but to seek particular
combinations of variables.
